สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ พระบรมราชชนนีพันปีหลวง ทรงตระหนักว่าการแต่งกายแบบดั้งเดิมของไทยถูกอิทธิพลวัฒนธรรมตะวันตกกลืนหายไป ไม่มีเครื่องแต่งกายที่เป็นแบบฉบับประจำชาติ ด้วยเหตุนี้ พระองค์จึงทรงมีพระราชดำริว่าควรมีเครื่องแต่งกายที่แสดงถึงเอกลักษณ์ความเป็นไทย ซึ่งผสมผสานธรรมเนียมการแต่งกายในราชสำนักสมัยโบราณให้เข้ากับยุคสมัยให้นานาประเทศได้รู้จัก จนเกิดเป็น “ชุดไทยพระราชนิยม ๘ แบบ”

Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, recognised that traditional Thai dress was fading under Western influence, leaving Thailand without a clear national costume. To preserve and promote Thai identity, she envisioned attire that truly reflected Thai heritage—blending traditional royal court styles with modern fashion. This initiative led to the creation of the eight styles of Thai Phra Rajaniyom.
